One Carries Current All Day. One Should Never Carry Any.
The neutral is a working conductor. On an ordinary circuit, it carries the return current of everything on that circuit, all day, every day. It is insulated because it is live in the sense that matters. Current flows in it whenever anything on the circuit is switched on.
The equipment grounding conductor is not a working conductor. In normal operation, it carries nothing at all. It exists so that if a hot conductor ever touches the metal of an appliance or a box, there is a low-resistance path back that allows enough current to flow to quickly trip the breaker. It is a fault path, and one that carries current in normal use is not doing its job.
The two are deliberately joined at one point, at the service, and separated everywhere after it. That single connection is what gives fault current somewhere to go. Add a second connection downstream, in a subpanel or a box or inside a piece of equipment, and normal return current starts dividing between the neutral and the grounding path. Some of it now travels on the metal of the house.
What People Ask When a GFCI Will Not Behave
1.Can I just replace the GFCI?
You can, and where the device has genuinely reached the end of its life, that is the repair. What we would insist on is establishing why it was tripping first, because a new device on an unchanged circuit will report the same condition. Three things stop one resetting: a genuine fault still present downstream, no power reaching its line side, and line and load reversed at some point in its life. Ruling those out comes before fitting anything.
2.Is this dangerous or just annoying?
That depends on how much current is taking the second path and on what metal it reaches, and neither is visible from the outside. What we can say is that the protective device tripping is the system working, and that switching to a device that does not trip removes the reporting while leaving the condition. If anything metal in the house gives any sensation at all, treat that as the urgent version.
3.Could my old dryer or range be causing it?
It is one of the recognized causes, so mention it on the call. Some older large-appliance connections tied the appliance frame to the neutral. That arrangement was once accepted. It is not how anybody does it now. Where one of those survives on a modern circuit, it produces exactly this pattern. It is a straightforward finding and a straightforward correction.
4.How do you find it?
By elimination, because there is nothing to see. We isolate the circuit and measure the relationship between the neutral and the grounding conductor with the load disconnected. That is the one condition in which the two should have nothing to say to each other. Then we load the circuit and read it again. It is methodical work, and the finding is what the visit produces.
5.Somebody worked on my panel, and this started afterward.
Then say so first, because it narrows the search enormously. A subpanel with its neutral bar bonded to the enclosure is one of the most common versions. It happens whenever somebody leaves the bonding screw or strap in as the panel goes up. Finding it is quick when somebody knows to look for it. Without that one sentence from you, it is the last place anybody checks.
