The Pair That Was Designed, and the Pair That Was Not
A multiwire branch circuit is two circuits run together. They take opposite legs of the supply and share one neutral conductor between them. It is a legitimate arrangement with a name. It saves a conductor, and it turns up most often in kitchens and in houses wired before arc-fault requirements made the arrangement awkward to build. Done correctly, it is unremarkable, and a great many kitchens have one.
It has two properties that matter to anybody working on it. First, the shared neutral carries only the difference between the two circuits, never their combined total. That is why one conductor does the work of two. It is also why disconnecting it while either circuit is live is genuinely dangerous. Second, the two breakers have to move together. That is why they carry a handle tie, or arrive as a single two-pole device.
It goes wrong like this. Somebody switches off one breaker, assumes the circuit is dead, and opens a box that still holds a live conductor and a shared neutral. That is the specific hazard the arrangement carries. It is also why the handle tie is not decoration.
Then there is the version that was never designed. Somebody working in a box put a neutral back on the wrong circuit. Now two circuits share a return that was never planned. Often on the same leg, where the design would have put them on opposite ones. So that conductor carries the sum of both currents, whereas it should carry their difference. It works. Nothing announces it. It is also one of the most common causes of a protective device tripping for no visible reason.
When One Breaker Kills Two Things
1.How do I know if I have a shared neutral?
You largely do not, from the outside, and you are not expected to. What you can notice is the behavior: one breaker affecting something on another, or two circuits that trip in company. If you have noticed either, say so, and treat the area as live until we have looked at it properly.
2.Is a shared neutral a fault?
The arrangement is normal and used deliberately. What turns it into a problem is specific: breakers that were never tied together, a neutral connected to the wrong circuit at some point in its life, or a shared connection that has loosened. Those are the findings worth acting on. What the arrangement is called matters less than whether it was executed and labeled as it must be.
3.My AFCI keeps tripping even when nothing is plugged in.
Common, and the neutral is the first thing to look at. These devices watch the relationship between conductors. A neutral that is shared, crossed, or landed on the wrong bar will trip one while the circuit itself does nothing. It can also be genuine damage in the wiring, which is why the answer comes from a test rather than from a look. The device itself is rarely the thing at fault.
4.Can I turn off both breakers and work on it myself?
We would rather you did not. The failure mode on these is a competent person making a reasonable assumption and being wrong about which conductors in the box are dead. If you are working on your own house, a circuit that behaves this way is one to leave alone.
5.Somebody worked on my kitchen and now unrelated things trip.
That is the pattern, and it is usually a simple mistake rather than bad work: a neutral put back on the wrong side of a box is an easy thing to do and produces exactly this. It is also entirely findable. Tell us what was worked on and when, because it shortens the search considerably.
