Why These Are Worth Chasing Properly

Most intermittent faults come back to a connection. A backstabbed outlet whose spring has relaxed, a wire nut that was never tightened, a lug in a panel that has loosened through years of heating and cooling, a neutral shared between circuits that has partly come adrift. All of them conduct perfectly well until something asks a little more of them. Failing devices, damaged cable, and rodent damage make up most of the rest; occasionally, the problem is on the supply side and belongs to the utility.

The reason to chase them is that the connection ones get worse. A connection that arcs intermittently generates heat in a confined space every time it does it, and the damage accumulates. The flicker somebody learns to live with in one year turns into the smell they call about in the next.

It also explains why swapping the obvious component so often fails. Replacing a flickering fixture when the loose connection is in the box upstream quietens it for a few weeks and no longer. Finding the condition first is the difference between fixing it and fixing the wrong thing.

Finding the Intermittent

What Actually Finds a Fault That Will Not Repeat

Five approaches, in roughly the order they get used. The first runs on what you have already seen. Three of the remaining four need the fault to show itself while somebody is standing there, which is exactly what a true intermittent will not do on request, and where it will not, the last one is what earns its keep.

The pattern, taken from you

The most useful evidence usually belongs to the householder already. Evenings only point at load. Hot afternoons point at thermal movement in a connection. After rain points outdoors. On the hour points at something on a timer. A few minutes of questions can cut the search down considerably, so we ask before we open anything. Where it stops working: a fault nobody has been home to witness leaves us starting from nothing.

Loading the circuit on purpose

A connection that has loosened or corroded behaves well at low current and misbehaves under load. Applying a controlled load to the circuit and monitoring the voltage while it runs will often reveal a fault that a quick continuity check would walk straight past. Where it stops working: a fault that answers to temperature or damp will sit through the whole test without moving.

Thermal imaging, with the covers off

A poor connection turns current into warmth. A thermal survey of the panel and of the accessible junctions and devices on the suspect circuit, taken under load, will show a warm spot where one exists. Where it stops working: the camera cannot see through a dead front or a cover plate, so the survey means opening things up, and a connection that is not misbehaving at that moment reads as normal.

Halving the run

On a fault that can be brought out on demand, the run gets split at a midpoint and the load applied to one half. The fault follows, or it stays behind, and the search halves. Repeated a few times, this narrows a long circuit down to a couple of boxes. Where it stops working, and why it comes after the other three: opening a box to split the run means handling the connections inside it, and handling a loose connection can reseat it, taking the evidence with it.

Leaving a recorder on it

When the fault runs on a rhythm of days, this is the honest answer. A voltage recorder or monitoring device stays on the circuit and captures the event with a timestamp and a magnitude. You end up with a timestamp where you had a recollection. Where it stops working: it will not always localize the fault on its own. Where it does not, it at least tells us what we are chasing.
