Six Tests You Can Run Before Calling Anybody

None of these needs a tool or a ladder. The first one can settle the question on its own; the other five narrow it, and every one of them shortens the conversation.

Move the appliance to a different circuit

The most decisive of the six, and worth doing first. Plug the suspect appliance into an outlet on a different circuit, ideally in another room, and use it normally. If the trouble travels with the appliance, it is the appliance. If it stays behind, it is the house side of the plug, which may be the outlet, the wiring behind it, or something shared with that circuit. The remaining tests narrow that down.

Put something else on the suspect circuit

The same test in reverse. A lamp, a fan, a phone charger. Something small and ordinary. If the circuit carries that without complaint, it is one point against the wiring, and only one: a fault that shows itself under real load will sit quietly under a lamp all evening.

A breaker that trips the instant something is switched on behaves differently from one that trips after ten or twenty minutes. The first often indicates a dead short, though it can also be a motor drawing its starting current through a marginal or worn breaker. The second points at something drawing steadily more than it should. Tell us which yours does and roughly how long it takes. One limit on all of it: try the handle once.
