Occupancy Is Low Here, and Installed Load Is Not
Scottsdale averages 2.03 people per household, among the lowest of the cities we work in. If demand followed occupancy, this would be the easiest panel work in the Valley. It is not, because the load in these houses is not attached to the people.
It is attached to the building. Circulation and heating equipment that runs on a timer whether anybody is home or not. Exterior and landscape circuits. A well-equipped kitchen used by two people. Conditioned storage. A garage that has acquired a compressor and a bench. Each of those draws on its own schedule, and several of them run unattended.
That changes what a load calculation has to count. An occupancy-based rule of thumb will understate a house like this, and the honest way through is to inventory what is actually installed.
Two People Can Load a Service Without Being in the Room
The smallest average household among the five cities we cover lives in houses with a substantial amount of fixed equipment. Those two facts pull in opposite directions, and the equipment wins.
A house with circulation equipment, exterior circuits on timers, conditioned storage and a well-fitted garage has a substantial baseline that has nothing to do with whether anybody is home. Add a car charging overnight, and the pattern is a long, flat, continuous draw, with a family house producing an evening spike.
Continuous load is the harder case. It is what heats terminations, it is what a service has to sustain hour after hour, and it is the reason a Scottsdale panel can be under real pressure in a house where two people live quietly.
So the calculation here counts equipment first and people second, which is the reverse of the usual order. Done that way, it produces a number you can trust. Done the usual way it produces a number that looks comfortable and is not.

1.There are two of us. How can the panel be under pressure?
Because the calculation counts equipment, not people. A household of two with substantial fixed plant can sit closer to its limit than a household of six with very little. Occupancy is almost irrelevant to the arithmetic.
2.Does the equipment outside count toward the calculation?
Yes, all of it, and it is the part most often missed. Pool and spa equipment, irrigation controls, landscape transformers, anything on a detached structure. If it is fed from your service, it is in the number.
3.My panel is full but nothing trips. Do I need anything?
Not necessarily. Nothing tripping suggests the load is inside what the circuits can carry. A full panel constrains what you can add next; that is a planning question, not a symptom. It is often answered by a second panel.
4.How long is the power off?
For the change-out, a working day is the usual shape. The unpredictable part is the supplier's scheduling around it, and anybody promising you a date before that is settled is guessing.
