How the Day Is Shaped

You, the Utility, the Inspector, and Us

Four parties are involved in a service change for a Fountain Hills house. The utility disconnects and reconnects the supply. The inspecting authority releases the work between those two events. We do the middle part. You live in the house while it happens. The utility shapes the day more than any of the others, and an electrician who implies otherwise is describing a job they have not booked yet.

In practice, that means we set the date once the utility confirms the disconnect window. That window is usually a block of hours rather than an appointment. We plan our own work to finish within it, with a margin, because the end of the day belongs to somebody else and there is nothing we can do to hurry it. Overrunning is the one failure on this job with an overnight consequence.

How the Work Goes

What You Should Do, and When

A week before: Tell us about anything that cannot lose power

Powered medical equipment above all. Then anything with a battery that will be running on it for hours. A home oxygen concentrator, a lift, a monitored alarm, a network cabinet, a work setup you cannot lose. Some of these change how the day is planned, and one or two of them change whether the day should happen at all without an arrangement in place.

A week before: Think about the refrigerator and freezer

A full freezer holds for a good while unopened and a half-empty one does not. If the contents matter to you, run them down beforehand or move them. Do not trust a figure somebody quotes you about how long a door stays cold.

The night before: charge things, and find the manuals

Phones, laptops, anything with a battery. And locate the reset instructions for whatever in the house has a clock, a code, or a schedule, because that list is longer than anyone expects.

On the day: Leave the working area clear and the dogs elsewhere

The panel, the meter, and the route between them. Doors will be open, the house will be noisy for part of it, and there will be a period when nobody can hear a doorbell because there is no doorbell.

Afterward: The restart list

Air conditioning first and slowly, because some equipment has a lockout timer and will not restart immediately by design. Then the clocks: oven, microwave, anything on a timer. Then irrigation controllers, which routinely lose their schedule. Then alarm panels and network equipment. Then walk the house and find every GFCI receptacle. Most will not have tripped, and any that have will need to be reset. All of them are worth pressing the test button on while you are going room to room anyway. We check the arc-fault protection ourselves before we leave, wherever in the house it happens to sit.

What Happens, and Roughly When

Rough durations for a straightforward residential service change. They move with the house.

Before anything is switched off: the walk and the photographs

Half an hour to an hour. We read the existing schedule, walk the circuits against it, and photograph everything as found, because the panel door is the only record most houses have, and it is wrong more often than it is right. On a house where the door has not described reality for years, this is also where you find out what actually feeds the garage.

The disconnect, and the first quiet hour

Ten minutes, and then the waiting starts. The supply comes off, and from here the house has no power at all, including anything you might have assumed was on a separate arrangement. Battery backups for medical equipment, alarms, and internet equipment are working off their own reserves from this moment, and those reserves are shorter than people assume.

The old equipment out, the new equipment in

Four to six hours on most houses, and the least eventful part of it to watch. We land the service-entrance conductors, make up the grounding and bonding, and terminate and label every branch circuit as it goes back in, while there is still something to read it against.

The hour the scope can still change

Sometime in the middle of that stretch. A panel is one of the few things in a house that cannot be fully assessed until it is off and open. What turns up is usually small. Occasionally it is not. A feeder to a subpanel that will not accommodate the new equipment’s requirements. A grounding electrode nobody can find. A meter enclosure in worse condition than the panel it feeds. Whatever we find in that hour we describe to you in that hour, with the options laid out and what each one does to the finish time, because the alternative is a customer discovering at five o’clock that the job they agreed to in the morning was a different job. We do not save scope up for the end of the day.

We write the schedule while the panel is still open

Ten minutes spread across the afternoon, which is when it can still be accurate. A schedule written while each circuit is landed is accurate. One reconstructed at five o’clock is a guess with a pen behind it.

Reconnection, which is not ours to schedule

Half an hour to a few hours, and none of it in our hands. The supply is restored when the utility does.

Bringing it back up, with you in the room

Twenty minutes or so. We bring every circuit up deliberately, in order, with one of us watching it, which is slower than throwing the main and walking away and is the whole reason for doing it that way. This is when a pre-existing fault somewhere in the house announces itself. Far better to find that with an electrician standing in the room than at nine that evening. One year on labor and materials on our work.
