Look at What Feeds the Room, Not at the Charger
Everything in a garage is fed from somewhere, and that somewhere is where a charger has to fit. It might be a couple of general-purpose circuits off the main panel. It might be a subpanel with its own feeder. A subpanel feeder was sized based on what the room was doing at the time, and nobody revisits that number until something forces a change.
The charger itself gets a dedicated circuit, sized with a margin, that belongs to the car alone. That part is settled. Where the room is fed by a subpanel, the difficulty is one level up: that dedicated circuit and everything else in the room draw through the same feeder, and the feeder rating is the number nobody has looked at. Where the room runs straight off the main panel, there is no shared feeder, and the question moves up to the service.
So on a main-panel garage, the job is usually simple. On a subpanel in a garage, or one where a workshop or compressor circuit has already been added, the sum starts with what that feeder carries and what is hanging off it.

1.Can the charger share a circuit with anything?
Not in the ordinary sense. A charging circuit supplies the charger, and it is not wired so that two ordinary loads can draw on it at will. There are recognized arrangements that look like exceptions: a listed interlock on an appliance circuit, wired so only one of the two can ever be energized, and listed load-management equipment that holds a total below a set figure. Both are real options in some houses, and both start from a different question. The contention question is a different one: it concerns what happens upstream of the charging circuit, where sharing is unavoidable and must be settled with numbers.
2.My garage has a subpanel. Is that good news or bad?
Usually good. A subpanel means a feeder has already been run out there, and adding a circuit inside it disturbs less of the house than running a new one out from the main panel. What we check is the feeder rating and what is already on it, and occasionally the answer is that the feeder has to be upgraded.
3.The compressor kicks in, and the lights dip. Does that matter for charging?
It tells you something useful. A visible dip means the starting current is producing a measurable voltage drop somewhere, which points to a long run, a marginal feeder, or a connection worth looking at. Little of that stops a charger from going in, and all of it changes the sizing, because the charger will be drawing when the compressor starts.
4.Can I run the charger and use the workshop at the same time?
That is the question, and it depends entirely on what is feeding the room. Where the answer turns out to be no, the practical fix is usually a lower charger setting rather than a bigger feeder, because the car has until morning to finish and the saw has to run now.
5.What if I want the charger outside the garage?
Then most of the contention problem falls away, and it becomes a straightforward outdoor circuit, with weather-rated equipment and its own set of considerations. Worth mentioning early, because the two jobs have very little in common.
6.Do I need a bigger service?
On most houses, the service is where this starts. On a garage already carrying permanent loads, it usually is not. The service feeds the whole house. The contention you are describing is happening on one supply to one room, and that is a separate and usually tighter piece of arithmetic. We do both sums. On a garage fed from its own subpanel, the tighter of the two is the local one, so we settle that first and confirm the service headroom after. Where the garage runs off the main panel, the two collapse into one.
